Nintendo of America’s president has spoken about Grand Theft Auto VI and Switch 2, and the answer Variety printed runs to 21 words. “That’s going to be a conversation for Take Two and Rockstar,” Devon Pritchard told Variety, in an interview published at 14:00 UTC on 9 October. She had “nothing to announce on my end at this time”.

For a player the short answer is this. Grand Theft Auto VI is announced for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, due on 19 November, and for nothing else. We found no statement from Nintendo, Take-Two or Rockstar that a Switch 2 version is being made, or that one isn’t. If you want the game on launch day, those two platforms are the only announced way to play it.

Her sentence points at two other companies, so we read their records. That meant every results release Take-Two has put out since the game entered its line-up table in February 2024, the index of Rockstar’s Newswire, 5,729 posts long, Nintendo’s United States store through the feed its own page loads, the rating board’s entries and the official specification pages for Switch 2 and the Xbox Series S.

Take-Two has printed that table 11 times with the game in it. The platforms beside Grand Theft Auto VI read PS5 and Xbox Series X|S in every one, while eight of its other games were listed for Switch 2. Rockstar itself has released one game for the console, Red Dead Redemption, 180 days after the machine came out. And the quickest any Rockstar game first released elsewhere has reached a Switch is 2,373 days.

  • GTA VI. Not announced for any Nintendo console. Rockstar’s site names PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S for 19 November, and Take-Two’s latest table gives the same two. On Switch 2, Nintendo of America’s president told Variety she had “nothing to announce on my end at this time”.
  • GTA V. No version on any Nintendo console, 4,771 days after the game first came out on 17 September 2013. Rockstar has since released it for PS4 and Xbox One, for PC and for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
  • GTA IV. No version on any Nintendo console, 6,738 days after the game first came out on 29 April 2008. Rockstar’s page for it lists Xbox One, PC, PS3 and Xbox 360.
  • The GTA Trilogy. On Switch since 11 November 2021, the day the Definitive Edition of the Trilogy came out on PlayStation, Xbox and PC. It is listed for the first Nintendo Switch. The store has no Switch 2 edition of it.
  • Red Dead Redemption 2. No version on any Nintendo console, 2,906 days after the game came out on 26 October 2018. Rockstar’s page for it lists PS4, Xbox One, PC and Stadia.
  • Red Dead Redemption. On Switch 2 since 2 December 2025, and on the first Switch since 17 August 2023. It is the only Rockstar game Nintendo’s store lists for Switch 2.
  • L.A. Noire. On Switch since 14 November 2017, 2,373 days after the game first came out. It is listed for the first Nintendo Switch. The store has no Switch 2 edition of it.
  • Bully. Not listed in Nintendo’s store. Rockstar’s own page for Bully still names the Wii among the game’s eight platforms, and no Switch.

Of the eight games, three are in Nintendo’s United States store, and one of the three is listed for Switch 2.

Listings are from Nintendo’s United States store, asked through the feed its own page loads. First release dates and platform lists are from Rockstar’s games pages, and later releases from its Newswire. The rating board’s entries are from its search. The quoted words are from Variety’s interview. All read on 10 October 2026. The day counts are ours, to that day, and the machine is our drawing.

The answer Variety printed has 21 words, and yes and no are not among them

Variety’s interview, by Jennifer Maas, ranges over a Zelda film, theme parks and that series’ 40th anniversary. It runs to 12 paragraphs, and Grand Theft Auto VI takes up two of them, a question and an answer. The magazine introduces Pritchard as president of Nintendo of America and says she took over from Doug Bowser in January.

The question is Variety’s own. It asks if the Switch 2 “tent” is big enough to hold a game with an M rating, then answers part of that itself, saying the console “certainly has the horsepower to host” the game. Those are the magazine’s words. Pritchard’s reply follows in one sentence, the one quoted above.

That sentence does two things. It says whose conversation this is, and it says she has nothing to announce. It doesn’t say the game is coming, and it doesn’t say it isn’t. The words yes, no, never, hardware and rating aren’t in it. Nor is any date.

Variety prints the publisher’s name as Take Two, with no hyphen, and so do we when quoting her. Five of the six other reports we read add one. Variety doesn’t say when she was interviewed, either. The photograph on its page is dated 17 September.

The line travelled fast. IGN had it up an hour and four minutes after Variety, and by 20:20 UTC there were six relays we could read. All six print her sentence in full. Their headlines are another matter. One quotes her, dropping three words. Four swap in a verb of their own, so that the game “is down to” the two companies, or is “Not Its Call”, or Nintendo is “quiet on” it, or she “Says Go Ask Rockstar”. One sets “Up To Take-Two” in quotation marks, though the phrase up to isn’t hers.

Kotaku adds, in its own voice, that the game won’t be on Switch 2, “at least not at launch and possibly not ever”. The first half follows from the announced platforms. The second is Kotaku’s guess, and Nintendo said nothing of the kind.

One sentence, seven reports

What did each headline make of her 21 words?

A news kiosk with the seven reports we read, in the order they went up on 9 October. Tap a paper to lay its headline on the counter. Words that are Devon Pritchard’s own are marked, and words an outlet chose for her are underlined.

  • 14:00 UTC, Variety. Nintendo of America Chief Breaks Down Her First Year: ‘Zelda’ Live-Action Movie, ‘GTA 6,’ Third-Party Game Goals and More The interview. The answer it prints is 21 words long.
  • 15:04 UTC, IGN. GTA 6 on Switch 2? ‘That’s a Conversation for Take-Two and Rockstar,’ Nintendo Says 1 h 4 min after Variety, IGN had the first relay we read. Its headline quotes her, keeping eight of her 21 words and dropping “going to be”.
  • 16:38 UTC, My Nintendo News. Nintendo of America president says GTA VI on Switch 2 is down to Rockstar and Take-Two 2 h 38 min after Variety. The verb is the outlet’s. She said whose conversation it is, and “down to” is not in her answer.
  • 16:58 UTC, DualShockers. Nintendo Says GTA 6 on Switch 2 Is Not Its Call 2 h 58 min after Variety. Not its call is the outlet’s summary. Her sentence says whose conversation it is and that she has nothing to announce.
  • 17:05 UTC, Nintendo Everything. Nintendo says it wants a diversity of games on Switch 2, quiet on GTA 6 hitting the system 3 h 5 min after Variety. Quiet is the headline’s word. The report leads with her line about a range of games and gives the Grand Theft Auto answer second.
  • 19:09 UTC, Kotaku. Will GTA 6 Ever Come To Switch 2? Nintendo Of America President Says Go Ask Rockstar 5 h 10 min after Variety. Go ask is Kotaku’s phrase, and Take-Two has dropped out of the headline.
  • 20:20 UTC, Insider Gaming. GTA 6 On Switch 2 ‘Up To Take-Two’ 6 h 20 min after Variety. The headline sets Up To Take-Two in quotation marks, and the phrase up to is not in her answer.

Of the six headlines that relayed the answer, one quotes it, four put it in words of their own and one sets in quotation marks a phrase she did not say.

The reports are by Variety, IGN, My Nintendo News, DualShockers, Nintendo Everything, Kotaku and Insider Gaming, read on 10 October 2026. Times are each page’s own, in UTC. Nintendo Life’s report refused our reader and is not here. The readings are ours, and the kiosk is our drawing.

Take-Two’s table has named the same two platforms 11 times

Pritchard named Take-Two first, and Take-Two is the one that publishes a schedule. Every quarter its results release carries a table of games on the way, in four columns, label, product, platforms and release date. Rockstar Games is one of the labels.

Grand Theft Auto VI entered that table on 8 February 2024, two months after Take-Two’s release announcing the game named PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The table has been printed 11 times with the game in it, most recently on 7 August 2026. The date beside the game changed three times, from Calendar 2025 to Fall of Calendar 2025, then to May 26, 2026, then to November 19, 2026. The platforms beside it never changed. All 11 say PS5, Xbox Series X|S.

The column isn’t shy of Nintendo’s console. Switch 2 first shows up in it on 15 May 2025, three weeks before the machine went on sale, beside Civilization VII and Borderlands 4. Since then eight games have been listed for it, Civilization VII, Borderlands 4, NBA 2K26, WWE 2K25, Red Dead Redemption, PGA TOUR 2K25, WWE 2K26 and NBA 2K27. One of the eight is Rockstar’s.

  • 8 February 2024. The date beside the game read Calendar 2025 and the platforms PS5, Xbox Series X|S. No row named Switch 2.
  • 16 May 2024. The date beside the game read Fall of Calendar 2025 and the platforms PS5, Xbox Series X|S. No row named Switch 2.
  • 8 August 2024. The date beside the game read Fall of Calendar 2025 and the platforms PS5, Xbox Series X|S. No row named Switch 2.
  • 6 November 2024. The date beside the game read Fall of calendar 2025 and the platforms PS5, Xbox Series X|S. No row named Switch 2.
  • 6 February 2025. The date beside the game read Fall of calendar 2025 and the platforms PS5, Xbox Series X|S. No row named Switch 2.
  • 15 May 2025. The date beside the game read May 26, 2026 and the platforms PS5, Xbox Series X|S. Two rows named Switch 2.
  • 7 August 2025. The date beside the game read May 26, 2026 and the platforms PS5, Xbox Series X|S. Three rows named Switch 2.
  • 6 November 2025. The date beside the game read November 19, 2026 and the platforms PS5, Xbox Series X|S. Three rows named Switch 2.
  • 3 February 2026. The date beside the game read November 19, 2026 and the platforms PS5, Xbox Series X|S. Three rows named Switch 2.
  • 21 May 2026. The date beside the game read November 19, 2026 and the platforms PS5, Xbox Series X|S. Two rows named Switch 2.
  • 7 August 2026. The date beside the game read November 19, 2026 and the platforms PS5, Xbox Series X|S. One row named Switch 2.

The date changed three times and the platforms never did. Eight games were listed for Switch 2 in those tables, Civilization VII, Borderlands 4, NBA 2K26, WWE 2K25, Red Dead Redemption, PGA TOUR 2K25, WWE 2K26 and NBA 2K27.

Read from the table of coming games, and the table of games just released, in each of Take-Two’s 11 results releases from 8 February 2024 to 7 August 2026; the releases are on its investor site. A row counts once for each release it appears in. The counts are ours, and the recorder is our drawing.

One of the eight shows that a row in the table is not a promise. Borderlands 4 for Switch 2 appeared with no date in May 2025, was given 3 October 2025 in a release of its own, went back to no date that November and has been missing from the three tables since. Those three releases give no reason, and Nintendo’s store has no listing for it.

Take-Two’s chief executive has spoken about Switch 2 and not, in what we read, about this game on it. On the results call of 6 February 2025, as The Game Post reported his words, Strauss Zelnick said the company had supported Nintendo’s platforms “when it made sense for the individual release”, and that “the Switch device can support any audience”. He had “nothing specific to report”, the report goes on, but would “fully expect to support” the new console. Variety’s report that day had him expecting Civilization VII on Switch 2, and it arrived. Neither report has him say anything about Grand Theft Auto VI on the console.

The forecast in the August release names the same two platforms as the table. Among the things it says Take-Two’s outlook depends on is continued growth in the number of PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles in use. No Nintendo machine is in that sentence. Nintendo’s own count puts Switch 2 at 23.68 million consoles sold by 30 June.

One Rockstar game has come out for Switch 2, and it left a trail

Rockstar has brought one game to Switch 2 so far. On 13 November 2025 it announced that Red Dead Redemption, a game from 2010, was coming to PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Switch 2, and its Newswire post had a line about the hardware. “On Nintendo Switch 2, we’ve taken full advantage of this new hardware”, it reads, before listing DLSS, HDR, mouse controls and 60 frames a second.

Rockstar put the same news on X that day.

Post: Rockstar Games, 13 November 2025.

The game went on sale on 2 December, 19 days after the announcement and 180 days after the console’s launch. It was 15 years old by then.

What makes it useful here is the trail it left. Four separate parties keep a public record when a game heads for a console, and all four recorded this one. Rockstar’s Newswire has two posts whose titles name Nintendo Switch 2. The rating board’s entry lists PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series. Nintendo’s store lists a Switch 2 edition dated 2 December 2025. And Take-Two’s table of 3 February 2026 carries the row, platforms and date.

For Grand Theft Auto VI and Switch 2, each of those four records is bare. None of the 12 Newswire posts tagged with the game mentions Nintendo. The rating board’s entry lists PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series. A search of Nintendo’s store for gta returns four listings, all from 2021. The table says what it has said 11 times. Rockstar’s support page even asks the question outright, “What platforms will Grand Theft Auto VI be on?”, and answers with the two platforms it takes pre-orders for.

Four record-keepers, one game

Who has seen the game on its way to a console?

A wall of four monitors, one for each party that keeps a public record when a Rockstar game heads for a console. They are Rockstar’s Newswire, the rating board, the console’s store and Take-Two’s table. Pick a case and see which screens show it.

  • Red Dead, Switch 2. 4 of 4 records. Rockstar’s Newswire, seen, 13 Nov 2025. A post whose title names Nintendo Switch 2. The rating board, seen, On file. Entry lists PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series. The console’s store, seen, 2 Dec 2025. A Switch 2 edition, rated M, from Rockstar Games. Take-Two’s table, seen, 3 Feb 2026. Row reads PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch 2.
  • GTA VI, Switch 2. 0 of 4 records. Rockstar’s Newswire, not seen. 12 posts on the game. None names Nintendo. The rating board, not seen. Entry lists PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series. The console’s store, not seen. A search for gta finds four listings, all from 2021. Take-Two’s table, not seen. Row reads PS5, Xbox Series X|S, 11 times running.
  • GTA VI, PS5 and Xbox. 4 of 4 records. Rockstar’s Newswire, seen, 5 Dec 2023. The Trailer 1 post names both platforms. The rating board, seen, On file. Entry lists PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series. The console’s store, seen, Listed. On both stores, for 19 November 2026. Take-Two’s table, seen, 8 Feb 2024. Row reads PS5, Xbox Series X|S.

The Newswire is Rockstar’s, read whole from the feed its page loads. The rating board’s entries are Red Dead Redemption’s and Grand Theft Auto VI’s. The stores are Nintendo’s, PlayStation’s and Xbox’s United States ones. The table is in Take-Two’s releases of 3 February 2026 and 7 August 2026. All read on 10 October 2026. The rating board’s entries carry no date. The monitors are our drawing.

A bare record is not a no. Rockstar announced the Red Dead Redemption port only 19 days before it went on sale, so a trail can start late. What the four records show is that on 10 October there was no trail for Grand Theft Auto VI.

Rumour has run ahead of the record. In March, Gameranx set out what the people behind a Switch 2 rumour were claiming. One relayed a source who said the game would be announced for the console by early May. Another said it was coming, though not at launch. No announcement followed, and on 10 October all four records were still bare.

No Rockstar game first sold elsewhere has reached a Switch in under 2,373 days

Rockstar’s Newswire goes back to August 2009. Its index held 5,729 posts when we read it, 3,368 of them with a title in the feed, and eight of those titles name a Nintendo console. Three are about L.A. Noire in 2017, three about Red Dead Redemption on Switch in 2023 and two about the same game on Switch 2.

L.A. Noire was the first. It came out on 17 May 2011 and reached the Switch on 14 November 2017, 2,373 days later. Nintendo’s channel still carries the trailer.

The only Grand Theft Auto games in Nintendo’s store arrived together. The Definitive Edition of the Trilogy came out on 11 November 2021, on Switch the same day as on PlayStation, Xbox and PC. It is a remaster of games from 2001, 2002 and 2004, so Grand Theft Auto III reached a Nintendo console 7,325 days after its first release.

Insider Gaming’s report gives 2022 for that arrival. Rockstar’s post and Nintendo’s listing both date the download to 2021. Nintendo’s own upload of the trailer is from February 2022, and its description says the set is out as a download and as a physical purchase.

Red Dead Redemption took about twice as long as L.A. Noire. It came out on 18 May 2010 and reached the Switch on 17 August 2023, 4,839 days on. Nintendo’s specification page says a Switch 2 takes Switch game cards as well. We haven’t tried these three releases on one.

Then there are the games that never came. Grand Theft Auto V has been released four times, for PS3 and Xbox 360 in 2013, PS4 and Xbox One in 2014, PC in 2015 and PS5 and Xbox Series X|S in 2022. On 10 October it had gone 4,771 days without a Nintendo version, and Red Dead Redemption 2 had gone 2,906. The rating board has three entries for each game, and no Nintendo console is in any of them.

Years waited, one stroke each

How long did Rockstar’s games take to reach a Nintendo Switch?

A wall of tally marks, one stroke for each full year since a game first came out. A ring closes the row in the year the game reached a Switch. A row that ends in dots was still counting on 10 October 2026. Tap a row.

  • L.A. Noire. 2,373 days from the game’s first release on 17 May 2011 to its arrival on a Nintendo Switch on 14 November 2017.
  • Red Dead Redemption. 4,839 days from the game’s first release on 18 May 2010 to its arrival on a Nintendo Switch on 17 August 2023.
  • GTA San Andreas. 6,225 days from the game’s first release on 26 October 2004 to its arrival on a Nintendo Switch on 11 November 2021.
  • GTA Vice City. 6,955 days from the game’s first release on 27 October 2002 to its arrival on a Nintendo Switch on 11 November 2021.
  • GTA III. 7,325 days from the game’s first release on 22 October 2001 to its arrival on a Nintendo Switch on 11 November 2021.
  • Red Dead Redemption 2. 2,906 days since the game first came out on 26 October 2018, counted to 10 October 2026, with no version for any Nintendo console.
  • GTA V. 4,771 days since the game first came out on 17 September 2013, counted to 10 October 2026, with no version for any Nintendo console.
  • GTA IV. 6,738 days since the game first came out on 29 April 2008, counted to 10 October 2026, with no version for any Nintendo console.

Five of the eight reached a Nintendo Switch, the quickest after 2,373 days. Three have no version for any Nintendo console.

First release dates are the ones Rockstar’s own games pages give. Arrival dates are from Rockstar’s Newswire and match the listings in Nintendo’s store. Consoles before the Switch are left out, because Rockstar’s pages give no date for its Wii and DS versions. The day and year counts are ours, and the wall is our drawing.

Further back the record is different. Rockstar’s own games pages list 43 titles, and ten of them name a Nintendo machine among their platforms, most of them from the Wii, DS and Game Boy years. Bully, Manhunt 2 and Table Tennis are listed for Wii. Two Grand Theft Auto games on those pages started on a Nintendo handheld. Grand Theft Auto Advance, from 2004, is listed for the Game Boy Advance alone, and Chinatown Wars came to the DS on 17 March 2009 and to the PSP 217 days later. The pages run behind, though. Red Dead Redemption’s still stops at Xbox One.

Nintendo’s spec page prints a figure on three lines out of five, and Xbox’s on all five

Whether a Switch 2 can run the game is the question under all the others. Variety says the console has the “horsepower”. IGN’s phrase for the Xbox Series S is “the less powerful” one. Neither is a company’s statement, and we haven’t tested anything. What we can do is set two official pages side by side, Nintendo’s for Switch 2 and Xbox’s for the Series S, the lesser of the two Xbox consoles the game is announced for.

Xbox’s page is all numbers. Eight processor cores, a graphics chip rated at 4 TFLOPS, 10 GB of memory, a 512 GB or 1 TB drive, a gaming resolution of 1440p and a target of up to 120 frames a second. Nintendo’s page is shorter where it counts. For the processor it prints five words, “Custom processor made by NVIDIA.” It gives no clock speed and no graphics figure, and it has no line for memory at all.

Nintendo’s overview video, from April 2025, speaks of “powerful processing speeds” in its description and puts no figure on them.

Three lines do carry figures on both pages. Built-in storage is 256 GB on Switch 2, part of it reserved for the system, against 512 GB or 1 TB. Extra storage is microSD Express cards of up to 2 TB against the 1 TB expansion cards Xbox names. For the picture, Nintendo prints what the console can send to a TV, 4K at 60 frames a second, or 1080p and 1440p at 120. Xbox prints a gaming resolution of 1440p and a target of up to 120. One is an output and the other a target, and neither says how a game would run.

Nintendo’s lines are from its technical specifications page for Switch 2 and Xbox’s from its page for the Series S, both read on 10 October 2026. These are the makers’ own printed figures. We have run nothing on either console, and the cards say nothing about how any game would perform. The table is our drawing.

One more number is missing, and it is the game’s own. None of the pages we read says how big Grand Theft Auto VI is. PlayStation’s listing prints no size. Xbox’s pre-order listing carries a figure of 328.76 MB, which our storage guide does not take for the finished game. So whether it would fit in 256 GB can’t be worked out from outside.

Nintendo’s store has 137 M-rated Switch 2 listings, and one is Rockstar’s

Variety’s question leaned on the rating, and came straight after Pritchard’s line that Nintendo is “for ages 5 to 95”. The rating board has rated Grand Theft Auto VI M, for Mature 17+.

The rating can be checked against Nintendo’s own shop. We asked its United States store through the feed the page loads, and set aside add-on content and upgrade packs. That left 897 listings for Switch 2, and 137 of them are rated M, about 15 in every 100. Across the whole store it is 2,290 of 24,929, a total that moved by one listing between our two reads that day. A listing is not quite a game, because editions are listed one by one.

The M-rated shelf isn’t obscure. It holds Cyberpunk 2077, on sale since the console’s launch day, Resident Evil Requiem, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, Elden Ring and The Witcher 3. It holds Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, due this month. And it holds Rockstar’s Red Dead Redemption. All eight of Rockstar’s listings in the store are rated M.

Rockstar’s trailer for that game names the console in its title.

Entries tagged DLC or Upgrade pack are left out; with them, the store’s own filter panel shows 293 Mature 17+ entries for Switch 2. A listing is not a game, since editions are listed one by one. The whole store’s total moved by one listing between our two reads that day. The shares are ours, and the tent is our drawing.

Two dates are on the calendar, and a third hasn’t been set

The table gets printed again with Take-Two’s next results, and the company hasn’t said when. In each of the last three years the autumn results came on 6 or 8 November, and the date was given out 28 days ahead, on 9 or 11 October. Its list of releases, read on 10 October, had no such notice yet.

Nintendo’s investor calendar has half-year results down for 5 November, 26 days after we read it, with a note that schedules can change. Grand Theft Auto VI itself is due on 19 November, 40 days off. Our release guide keeps the dates and platforms.

If a Switch 2 version is ever announced, Red Dead Redemption shows where to look. A Newswire post, a rating board entry that names the console, a store listing, a changed cell in the table.

There are limits to this. We read pages and lists, and the store we read is the United States one. A listing can change on any day. We haven’t played the game.
