in the story.

“Sold out” is a status.
It isn’t a sales figure.

A box can disappear from a retailer’s preorder page even when the thing it unlocks arrives over the internet. For GTA VI, that distinction now matters to anyone deciding how to buy.

RockstarINTEL’s October 12 report, by Aaron Trueman, said Amazon US’s PS5 and Xbox Series X|S boxed listings could no longer be preordered as of October 11. It also described unavailable Target preorders in some US locations, with availability varying by store. Those are dated observations from that publication; we could not independently verify current retailer inventory.

The useful question is narrower than whether “GTA 6 has sold out.” Which offer, for which platform, from which seller, delivered where? A national headline cannot answer a local checkout question. Nor does an unavailable product page tell an existing customer whether their accepted order will be fulfilled.

This report has not established why each listing stopped accepting orders. An allocation being exhausted is one possible explanation; a listing or fulfilment constraint is another. The words on the page alone cannot decide between them.

The packaging is physical.
The delivery is digital.

Rockstar’s platform and editions support page describes a download code inside the box and explicitly says a disc is not included. The announced boxed product is Standard Edition; its owners can purchase the Ultimate upgrade after redeeming the code.

That changes the questions a buyer should ask. A photograph of a case is evidence of an object, not evidence that the installation data lives on a disc. You still need to consider the platform account, download and installation. A packaged code can still be attractive as an object to keep or give. But the object and the permission to download should be evaluated separately. If a listing uses a familiar word such as “physical,” read the contents immediately below it rather than supplying the meaning from an older game purchase.

Collectors should also distinguish this game-code package from the Vice City Collection merchandise . Similar branding does not make two offers interchangeable. Use the contents of the exact listing you are considering, not the contents of a different collector product.

The card is not
the whole transaction.

PlayStation’s voucher guidance says a voucher can be used once and that content cannot be transferred between accounts. Xbox’s redemption guidance likewise tells you to sign into the intended Microsoft account because redeemed codes cannot be transferred to another account.

That makes a secondhand empty box a very different proposition from an unused entitlement. The existence of the case does not establish that its code is unused. If you are buying a gift, decide who will redeem it before using the voucher yourself. Check the platform and applicable product-region rules before committing.
